About the Parish

A Parish Rooted
in Living Tradition

Since 1887, St. Clement’s has stood at the corner of Church Street and Elm Avenue — a parish of the Episcopal Church in the Diocese of Northern Ohio, serving the people of Harborview through worship, pastoral care, and steadfast presence in the community.

Our History

From Settlement Chapel to Parish Church

In the spring of 1887, a group of Harborview settlers gathered in a borrowed schoolroom to celebrate Holy Communion according to the rites of the Episcopal Church. Within a year, they had laid the cornerstone for St. Clement’s — named for the first-century Bishop of Rome, patron saint of sailors and those who find their way by water.

The current stone building, consecrated in 1923, stands as a testament to the faith and craftsmanship of its builders. The stained glass windows, designed by the Willet Studios of Philadelphia, depict scenes from the Acts of the Apostles. The pipe organ, a three-manual Skinner instrument, was installed in 1937 and remains one of the finest on the north coast.

Through depression, war, social upheaval, and renewal, St. Clement’s has remained a place of prayer, a center of service, and a community of faith. We continue the work of those first settlers — worshipping God, forming disciples, and serving our neighbors.
